Crane Beach & the South-East Coast of Barbados: What to Do Near The Crane

Quick answer

Crane Beach in St Philip is one of the most beautiful beaches in Barbados, with pink-tinged sand, cliffs and Atlantic waves that are great for bodyboarding. The Crane resort above it dates from 1887. Nearby you can see Bottom Bay, Foul Bay, Ragged Point and Sunbury Plantation House, and the airport is only 10–15 minutes away.

The south-east coast feels wilder than the rest of Barbados: dramatic cliffs, rolling Atlantic surf and empty coves. It is also one of the quickest places to reach from the airport.

Crane Beach

The beach below The Crane has soft, pink-tinged sand framed by cliffs. A reef shelters part of the bay, but the water can be choppy, so it suits confident swimmers and bodyboarders. Resort guests reach the sand by a glass lift; the public path starts at the southern end of Crane Beach Road.

The Crane resort

Open since 1887 and described by the resort as the longest continuously operating hotel in the Caribbean, The Crane has a 1.5-acre cascading pool complex, a historic adults-only pool on the cliff edge and the free Calypso Kids Club for ages 4–12. Restaurants include Zen (Japanese and Thai), Azure, Poesia No. 3 (Italian), The Carriage House, The Grove Bar & Grill on the beach and Bar 1887 for cocktails and live music.

Nearby beaches and viewpoints

  • Bottom Bay — a postcard cove of palms, cliffs and white sand. Rough water and no lifeguard, so come for the view and photos rather than a swim.
  • Foul Bay — a long, quiet beach with fishing boats and a car park; strong undertow, and hawksbill turtles nest here.
  • Harrismith — rock pools to paddle in at low tide below an old ruined hotel.
  • Ragged Point — the island’s easternmost point, with an 1875 lighthouse and cliff-top views.

Things to do

  • Sunbury Plantation House — a 1660 great house with antiques and gardens (reopening 20 October 2026).
  • Sam Lord’s Castle — the ruins of the 1820s mansion now sit within the Wyndham Grand Barbados resort.
  • Codrington College and St John’s Parish Church — historic sites with sweeping views over the east coast.
  • Bathsheba and Andromeda Botanic Gardens — about 25–30 minutes north for the island’s famous east coast scenery.
  • Oistins Fish Fry — about 15 minutes away on a Friday night. See our Oistins guide.

Getting here: non-stop flights reach Barbados (BGI) from London Heathrow and Gatwick (about 8–9 hours), Toronto (about 5–6 hours) and US gateways including Miami, New York JFK, Boston, Charlotte and Atlanta (about 3–5 hours). See our guide to flights from the UK, Canada and USA.
