Holetown & Barbados’s Platinum Coast: Beaches, Restaurants & Things to Do

Quick answer

Holetown, in St James, is the heart of Barbados’s west or “Platinum” coast: calm Caribbean beaches, turtle snorkelling at Paynes Bay, the Folkestone Marine Park, fine dining such as The Cliff and The Tides, and Limegrove Lifestyle Centre for shopping. It is about 30 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from Bridgetown.

The west coast is where Barbados earns its reputation for luxury: glassy water, sunset dinners on the sand and grand villas in the hills. Holetown sits in the middle of it all.

A little history

Holetown was the site of the first English settlement on Barbados in 1627, and St James Parish Church dates from 1628. 2027 marks the 400th anniversary of settlement, and the Holetown Festival (14–21 February 2027) celebrates it with a week of music, food and street parades.

Beaches and snorkelling

  • Paynes Bay — wade out from the public path to snorkel with green and hawksbill turtles; mornings around 9–10am are best.
  • Folkestone Marine Park — an inshore reef with an underwater trail, lifeguards and gear hire; experienced divers can visit the Stavronikita wreck.
  • Sandy Lane beach — public access by the blue sign at the hotel wall, with calm water and a beach bar.
  • Mullins and Gibbes — 15 minutes north for a quieter beach day.

Where to eat

Book ahead in winter. The Cliff at Derricks is the island’s most famous fine-dining room, lit by torches above the sea. The Tides in Holetown serves lunch and dinner in a garden on the water, and Lone Star at Mount Standfast is a beachfront favourite near Royal Westmoreland. For something casual, the beach bars and rum shops along First and Second Street come alive at night.

Shopping and days out

  • Limegrove Lifestyle Centre — luxury brands, restaurants and a cinema in Holetown.
  • Catamaran cruises — half-day and full-day sails with turtle swims and lunch.
  • Golf — Royal Westmoreland, Sandy Lane and Apes Hill are all close by. See our golf guide.
  • Polo — the season runs in the winter and spring months at the island’s polo clubs.

Getting here: non-stop flights reach Barbados (BGI) from London Heathrow and Gatwick (about 8–9 hours), Toronto (about 5–6 hours) and US gateways including Miami, New York JFK, Boston, Charlotte and Atlanta (about 3–5 hours). See our guide to flights from the UK, Canada and USA.
