Quick answer
Oistins Fish Fry happens every Friday night (and more quietly on Saturdays) in the fishing town of Oistins on Barbados’s south coast. Arrive around 7–8pm, order grilled or fried fish with macaroni pie and sides from one of the stalls, bring Barbados dollars in cash, and stay for the music and dancing.
The Friday night Fish Fry at Oistins Bay Garden is the island’s favourite night out, shared by locals and visitors alike. Here is how to make the most of it.
When to go
- Friday is the big night. Stalls open from around 6:30pm and it is busiest from 8pm to 10pm.
- Saturday is quieter, with food from around 7pm.
- Easter weekend brings the Oistins Fish Festival, with boat races, fish-boning contests and music.
What to order
Flying fish (the national dish, usually with cou-cou), mahi-mahi (called dolphin locally), grouper, snapper, swordfish and lobster are all grilled or fried to order. Sides are part of the fun: macaroni pie, breadfruit, plantain, rice and peas, and salad. Long-running stalls such as Pat’s Place and Uncle George’s are popular, and queues are a good sign. Expect plates of roughly BBD $25–55 (US$12.50–27.50), more for lobster.
Tips for first-timers
- Bring cash in Barbados dollars; not every stall takes cards.
- Order first, then grab a seat at the shared picnic tables.
- A rum punch or Banks beer from the bars completes the evening.
- Stay for the music: older couples dancing to oldies at one end, louder soca and dancehall at the other.
- Take a taxi, or walk if you are staying nearby, so nobody has to drive.
