Quick answer
Barbados’s northwest coast in St Peter is quieter and more local than Holetown. Mullins Beach has calm water and a beach club, Speightstown is a historic port town with an esplanade and The Fish Pot nearby, and Port St. Charles is a private marina village with its own beach and yacht club. The airport is about 35–40 minutes away.
If you want the calm turquoise water of the west coast without the crowds, head north to St Peter. Here is our guide to the area around our LunaSol homes at Heron Mill and our Port St. Charles penthouse.
Beaches
- Mullins Beach — calm, family-friendly water with a roped swimming area, snorkelling and jet skis, plus the Sea Shed Beach Club for lunch.
- Gibbes Beach — next to Mullins and quieter, with palm shade and calm water for swimming and snorkelling.
- Heywoods Beach — a long, quiet stretch north of Speightstown with a lifeguard on duty.
- Six Men’s Bay — a working fishing village where you can watch traditional boatbuilding.
Speightstown
Once second only to Bridgetown as a trading port, Speightstown has kept its old-island character: an esplanade with a bandstand and jetty, a waterfront boardwalk, and small shops and rum shops. Orange Street Grocer is a relaxed café for lunch (cash only), and The Fish Pot at Little Good Harbour, set in a 17th-century fort just north of town, is one of the island’s loveliest seafood restaurants.
Port St. Charles
Port St. Charles is a private marina village on the coast at Heywoods, with berths for yachts and superyachts, its own customs and immigration, a heliport, pools and a beach. The Yacht Club restaurant is open to the public for lunch. Our 4-bedroom lagoon front penthouse sits on a private island in the marina lagoon.
Day trips from the northwest
- St Nicholas Abbey — a 1658 Jacobean great house with its own rum distillery and heritage steam railway (open Sunday to Friday).
- Barbados Wildlife Reserve — see green monkeys up close, best at the 2pm feeding, opposite Farley Hill National Park.
- Animal Flower Cave — sea caves and rock pools at North Point (closed Mondays).
- Holetown — restaurants, shopping and history about 15 minutes south. See our Holetown guide.
Getting here: non-stop flights reach Barbados (BGI) from London Heathrow and Gatwick (about 8–9 hours), Toronto (about 5–6 hours) and US gateways including Miami, New York JFK, Boston, Charlotte and Atlanta (about 3–5 hours). See our guide to flights from the UK, Canada and USA.
