The Best Beaches in Barbados, Coast by Coast

Quick answer

For calm swimming, choose the west coast (Mullins, Paynes Bay, Sandy Lane) or Carlisle Bay. For lively beaches with bars and water sports, choose the south coast (Dover, Accra, Miami Beach). For dramatic scenery and surf, choose the south-east (Crane Beach, Bottom Bay). Every beach in Barbados is public.

Barbados has more than 60 beaches, and every one of them is public. Which is “best” depends on what you want from your day. Here is our pick, coast by coast.

West coast: calm Caribbean water

  • Mullins Beach — family-friendly, with a roped swimming area and the Sea Shed Beach Club.
  • Gibbes Beach — quieter neighbour to Mullins with palm shade.
  • Paynes Bay — the best place to snorkel with turtles, especially mid-morning.
  • Sandy Lane beach — public access by the blue sign; calm and beautiful.
  • Folkestone Marine Park — snorkel trail and reef close to shore in Holetown.
  • Heywoods — long and quiet, north of Speightstown.

South coast: lively and walkable

  • Dover Beach — lifeguard, water sports and St Lawrence Gap behind it.
  • Accra (Rockley) Beach — bodyboarding, boardwalk and a beach bar.
  • Miami (Enterprise) Beach — calm west end for children, near Oistins.
  • Carlisle Bay — the calmest water on the island, shipwrecks and turtles near Bridgetown.
  • Silver Sands — the island’s kitesurfing beach, with strong undercurrents.

South-east coast: scenery and surf

  • Crane Beach — pink-tinged sand, cliffs and bodyboarding waves.
  • Bottom Bay — the classic palm-and-cliff cove; best for photos, not swimming.
  • Foul Bay — long, quiet and wild, with fishing boats.

Beach safety

The west and south coasts are generally calm, but the Atlantic-facing south-east and east coasts have strong currents and few lifeguards. Swim where there is a lifeguard, watch for sea urchins and coral at low tide, and use reef-safe sunscreen.

Getting here: non-stop flights reach Barbados (BGI) from London Heathrow and Gatwick (about 8–9 hours), Toronto (about 5–6 hours) and US gateways including Miami, New York JFK, Boston, Charlotte and Atlanta (about 3–5 hours). See our guide to flights from the UK, Canada and USA.

Frequently asked questions

Are all beaches in Barbados public?

Yes. By law every beach in Barbados is public, although access paths sometimes run beside hotels.

Which side of Barbados has the calmest water?

The west coast (Caribbean side) and Carlisle Bay on the south-west have the calmest water for swimming.

Where can I swim with turtles in Barbados?

Paynes Bay on the west coast and Carlisle Bay near Bridgetown are the best-known spots, and many catamaran cruises stop at turtle sites.

Is Crane Beach safe for children?

Crane Beach can have choppy Atlantic waves, so younger children are usually better off at calmer west or south coast beaches.
